This is a question I am asked on a regular basis, .com or .ie? To correctly and quickly answer this you must first know the answer to the following question – Where is the target audience for my website located? In other words, are you targeting an Irish market or a global market. Here is my experience on the matter.
- .ie domains prove your are 100% an Irish company as you must demonstrate your connection with Ireland such as your registered business number for a business related domain or a passport for a personal name
- If targeting an Irish market, .ie domains hosted within Ireland and having an Irish IP address generally tend to perform better on the search engines, potentially leading to a higher volume of traffic on your site
- If targeting a global market then .com is definitely the option for you. I find it wise to register both domains if they are available and if trading globally, have your website on the .com domain and point the .ie domain toward it.
- Price. The .ie domains tend to be around €20 more expensive than the .com domain. The prices vary quite a lot depending on the registrar you use. A .com should never set you back more than €10
Conclusion: all in all it really depends on what and where you are marketing. If trading within Ireland and Ireland is your target audience then I would recommend you use the .ie domain.
